Mamoru Sugiyama “Metamorphosis”   July 2 - 18, 2009

Mamoru Sugiyama points his lens at things and scenes close to him in daily life. These photographs were shown at the exhibition titled “Still Life" in 2001, “LIFE" in 2003, and “Everyday Life" in 2006.
Reality of things and scenes are highlighted by both light and shadow in Sugiyama's black & white photographs. By and by, he looks toward naked woman. There exists the nude body quietly as if it is an insect in the plants and trees. Sugiyama finds reality of life in woman in the nude who is as naked as nature intended. The series of work “Metamorphosis" is captured maintaining a certain distance as he did for ordinary things and scene of everyday life. He highlights the reality of “things" and “life" more clearly, also symbolizes change.

Around 30 gelatin silver prints are exhibited. The book “Metamorphosis" is published in conjunction with the exhibition.

Mamoru Sugiyama

Born in Aichi prefecture, 1951. Graduated from the Department of Photography, College of Art, Nihon University, 1976. Staff photographer, Nippon Design Center, Inc., 1978-1983. Freelance photographer since 1983.
Received Special Award, APA Exhibition (APA= Japan Advertising Photographers' Association) while a student in 1975, and received many awards for his advertising photography.
