It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Yasuhiro Ishimoto on Feb. 6, 2012. In memory of Yasuhiro Ishimoto, Photo Gallery International holds an exhibition of his acclaimed work “Chicago, Chicago”.
Since 1982, P.G.I. has been honored to hold more than 20 of his exhibitions. Indeed, we exhibited his work “Mandala” just at the end of last year.
Not only his work but also his attitude towards photography continues to influence us profoundly. “Chicago, Chicago” is one of Ishimoto’s foundational work and despite the fact that it was published 40 years ago, it is still fresh today.
Although, Ishimoto studied photography at Chicago Institute of Design, where he learnt from Harry Callahan and Aron Siskind, at the time he shot “Chicago, Chicago” he had already been living in Japan for 6 years. This gave him the perspective of an outsider in a city he knew well, and the photographs he took over his 3 years stayreflect a broarder view of life in the city than he had produced earlier.
38 gelatin silver prints are shown at the exhibition.
This exhibition is produced in the official cooperation with The museum of art, Kochi, as such no prints are available.
