Born in Osaka, Japan in 1973. Marui began his artwork while he was a university student at Tokyo National University of the Arts and has been exhibiting pieces related to his current theme, Photographs x Philosophy since 2000. His work includes The Map (2003), an inquiry into the anonymity of scenery, and Along the Coastline-from Cape Kyan to Mabuni (2008), in which he sought the relationship between the meaning of a place and its history. In his third series, Collecting Light, he pursued the beauty of photographs and light in an attempt to convey that “by looking at objects or taking photographs we are able to unravel the details of the world, but at the same time, there are some things that are unconsciously disposed” to the viewer.
