Born in San Francisco in 1921. Yasuhiro Ishimoto moved to Kochi Prefecture in Japan with his parents in 1924, yet returned to the United States in 1939. He enrolled in the Photography Department of the Chicago Institute of Design in 1948, where he studied the “New Bauhaus” under Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. Ishimoto moved back to Japan to be a photographer in 1953. His sharp, intellectual photographs were quickly recognized as fresh and original. In the same year he created one of his most famous series, Katsura. He possessed a unique gift for composition which can be seen throughout his work. Among his best known series are Chicago, Tokyo, Katsura, Mandala and Ise. Ishimoto donated his archive of over 10,000 images to the Museum of Art, Kochi in 2004.

Died at the age of 90 on February 6, 2012.
